In a world that celebrates extraordinary achievements and exceptional talents, it's easy to feel inadequate if we perceive ourselves as ordinary. But what if we started to appreciate the value in our everyday lives? What if being ordinary wasn't a setback, but a testament to the beauty of simplicity and the importance of each role we play in life?
I have always dreamed of being extraordinary. Since I was a little child, I always thought about doing extraordinary things. For instance, when I dreamed of myself as a teacher, I imagined myself as an exemplary and brilliant one, standing out from my fellow teachers, whom many schools would want to employ. When I wanted to be a newscaster, I envisioned myself as the best broadcaster, unique in my way of dressing and speaking, with an intelligent approach to casting news that would make every TV channel want to hire me.
In every thought I had of myself, I always saw myself as being extraordinary. So why, at age 26, am I working a bank job as a contract staff, living in a space I have never felt comfortable in, planning every year to pursue my master’s or certification—plans which always fall through—and yet to achieve the extraordinary life I envisioned.
I have felt depression fighting myself in trying to be extraordinary but as time went on i came to realize that my ordinariness is not a limitation, but a unique strength. I may not be a brilliant mind or a genius, but I've learned to find joy in the simple moments, the steady jobs, and the quiet but essential roles I fulfill. Maybe one day I will find my extraordinary but till then embracing my ordinariness didn’t feel like a bad idea—it is accepting who I am and accepting this is what I am capable of.
Being ordinary doesn't mean being unimportant. It means recognizing the significance of our daily contributions, no matter how small they may seem and how they can be fulfilling. It means understanding that our worth is not solely determined by extraordinary achievements, but by the kindness we show, the efforts we make, and the lives we touch every day.
Some people are meant to shine bright, while others are meant to spread their light across the world. Both are lights but they shine in different ways. You may not be extraordinary, but you are ordinary in a unique way, and that is more than enough. You shine!
So, let's celebrate the small victories, the steady progress, and the beauty of simply being. Let's find fulfillment in the ordinary moments, and recognize the extraordinary impact we have on those around us. Let’s be confident and embrace our simplicity.
Always love,
Helen.
